Apex of Stone

A snapshot from San Marino

By / May 2013

The fortress of Guaita, constructed in the 11th century, is the highest point in the tiny nation of San Marino. Founded¬†¬†in the 3rd century and confined to a single mountaintop in central Italy, San Marino claims to be the world’s oldest and smallest republic. Through the centuries, Guaita has served as a castle, prison, and fortress, and has become the national symbol of San Marino.
