In addition to stories from regular contributors, EthnoTraveler accepts submissions from talented freelance writers and photographers. Writers are encouraged to read ethnotraveler.com to get a sense of the magazine’s content and style.
Profiles: In-depth pieces about people of note, people whose lives are a window into a particular trend or cultural phenomenon.
Dispatches: Essays from a particular neighborhood, street, or geographic region that give readers a taste of what life is like there.
Interview: Narrative Q&As with interesting characters.
Personal Essays: Anecdotal pieces about experiences or the process of adjusting to life abroad.
Other genres: (i.e. photo essays, book and film reviews, etc) may be accepted and will be published on a case by case basis.
We do not accept fiction, poetry, or previously published articles.
A query must consist of the following information to be considered:
1. a brief cover letter stating the subject and word length of the proposed article;
2. a detailed outline explaining the information to be presented in the article;
3. a list of sources (including interviews) the author intends to use in preparing the article;
Authors new to EthnoTraveler should send a writing sample with the query. All queries should be sent to submissions(at)ethnotraveler.com.
Payment for articles varies and is negotiated with the writer.
