With metallic gold and silver thread, Zahir’s father knitted designs into velvet cloth, a traditional Indian and Pakistani technique called zardosi. Zahir watched his father create, marveled at his concentration. The old man made a point of teaching the young Zahir the craft. But with Afghanistan in turmoil, a more pressing lesson loomed. The old man needed to teach Zahir how to flee.
