Nairobi means "cool waters"

By / September 2013

Although Nairobi has become the heartbreaking scene of an ongoing terrorist coup, it has seen more peaceful days. The capital and largest city in Kenya, “Nairobi” derives from a local dialect, meaning “cool waters.” We are hoping that the city, a place that one of our contributors described as equal part exciting and bewildering, will soon return to its namesake–and carry on as a place of cool waters for its people. According to the BBC, this may be happening very soon.
