High Five

A snapshot from the Himalayan foothills

By / May 2013

Pakariya is a Nepalese village south of Kathmandu, in the foothills of the Himalayas. The ochre walls of houses are often decorated with handprints and paintings of birds. “Beautiful in their simplicity,” writes EthnoTraveler contributor Allison Davies in her accompanying essay, “these traditional paintings are refreshed with a new coat of paint at festival time or to celebrate a rite of passage like the birth of a son or a marriage.”
